So why do men pay prostitutes for sex?
That question - and an absence of answers - is giving anti-prostitution groups in the USA a bit of headache.
These groups who want the sex industry shut down, have given up targeting the hookers and are shifting their focus to the men who use them.
But there is so little hard data on WHY men use sex workers, they're struggling to work out how best to target these blokes.
So one of these groups asked around 200 men who use prostitutes that question.... Why?
The responses were interesting. Most of them said there's nothing wrong with visiting houses of ill-repute.
87% said buying sex was a form of addiction. Most thought women entered the industry voluntarily but acknowledged that the sex industry wasn't great for the women working in it....
40% of these blokes said they were intoxicated when they paid for sex.
Many of these guys also viewed their contact with sex workers as a business contract - and as long as cash has changed hands - they had the right to treat the women any way they like.
But what's painfully clear is that - despite prostitution being around for thousands of years - we don't know much about WHY some guys pay for sex... and why other blokes NEVER do....
So let's try to find out.
If you do pay for sex, why? What are your reasons?
And if you have NEVER paid for sex - why not? Is there something specific preventing you?
And we might as well try for the other side of the story too. If there are any sex workers - former or current - reading this blog, what light can you shed on this question?
Why do men pay for sex?
Over to you.......
