Should people start recieving money for organ donations?
Calling all young, healthy people who want to make a quick $50,000.
All you need to do is lose one of those pesky spare organs you're not using - like a kidney.
There is some pain, but think about the cash!
Sounds bizarre, but a Canberra-based kidney expert, Dr Gavin Carney, reckons it would help to fix Australia's chronic lack of donated organs.
You can see why he might say that, given that 1,300 people are waiting for a kidney, but only 343 were donated last year.
Dr Carney is probably sick of seeing his long-suffering patients die before they can have a used part fitted.
What do you think?
A good idea? A way to pay for HECS debts or use it as deposit on a home?
For what it's worth, I'd prefer to see surplus organs donated.
I'm not a fan of putting a dollar value on people, or their various parts.
A better plan might be the one being considered by the Queensland government, where your organs are re-used unless you 'opt out' of the arrangement.
If some refuse to give their organs, that is their right - no worries.
Should organs be bought, sold and traded, or donated freely?
Over to you.....
