Is Brendan Nelson the right man to lead the Liberal party?

Prime Minister-elect Kevin Rudd has announced his new Ministry and we'll have plenty of time to see how they go in their respective portfolios.

What's arguably more interesting - at least for a week or so - is the fallout from the end of the Howard years.

The Liberals have proved themselves quirkier than most thought, narrowly electing the 'shop-a-holic' former Defence Minister, Dr Brendan Nelson as leader.

Nelson beat off a serious challenge from Malcolm Turnbull, who will become Shadow Treasurer, probably because he shut his mouth in the lead-up to the vote - unlike Turnbull - who was publicly talking about all sorts of policy areas without any consultation with the party he hoped to lead. Shades of John Howard there.

I call Nelson a 'shop-a-holic' based on his purchase of a whole bunch of really expensive fighter jets that no-one in the ADF actually wants.

The former Labor Party member, earring wearing, Harley-riding moderate, Nelson is hardly a 'traditional' Liberal - unlike Turnbull.

But with the smiling attack-dog and self-confessed Howard zealot, Tony Abbott, sniping at his heels Nelson has his job ahead of him trying to drag the Liberals kicking and screaming into the 21st Century.

It's either that or political oblivion for the all-new Federal Opposition.

Is Dr Brendan Nelson the man to keep the Cult of Kevin in check?

Over to you.....
